Keela has been pattern-reading since before she had a word for it. As a junior Archivist student in Lumik, the city built into the ice, she sees what others miss: the wrong number in a footnote, the gap in a citation, the inconsistency hiding in a paper that everyone older has already read and approved. Most of it doesn't matter. Most of it is just sloppy scholarship. But one of these errors isn't an error at all, and the more Keela looks at it, the more she realizes that everyone older than her has agreed not to. She doesn't tell anyone. She goes to find it herself. Voices Beneath the Ice is an origin novella set in the world of the Fractured World Saga, told from Keela's point of view before any of the books begin. A story about what it costs to read what no one else is willing to read.
