A radio astronomer in the Australian outback finds something in the gaps between radio pulses. Something that isn't natural. Lena Brandt came to the Murchison Widefield Array to study repeating fast radio bursts. For eleven weeks she has tracked FRB 20251107A, a signal from four and a half billion light-years away. When she analyzes the intervals between bursts, she finds structure that no magnetar model can explain. A pattern too precise to be astrophysical. Too complex to be random. And too old to be meant for us. Dead Frequency is a hard science fiction short story about pattern recognition, the loneliness of knowing, and what happens when a scientist sees something in the data that she cannot unsee.
