The Martin County Sheriff's Office hired Gerard Schaefer in June 1972. He came with a reference letter from his previous department. Someone processed that paperwork. The procedure did not require a phone call to verify the letter. Nobody made one. Six weeks later, two teenage girls ran out of the woods on Hutchinson Island with their hands tied behind their backs. Eighteen months after that, a trophy box in Schaefer's bedroom contained the belongings of women who had never been found. In 2022, DNA technology identified the remains of Susan Poole — fifteen years old, missing since Christmas 1972, found tied to a tree on Hutchinson Island in 1974. For forty-eight years, she had no name. The person who processed the paperwork was never named either.
