Alice has always assumed that Charles Barnfield — handsome, cheerful, and refreshingly uncomplicated — would one day be her husband. Then Lord Hartwood returns from abroad.
He is everything Charles is not: titled, fashionable, and possessed of an affected drawl that sets Alice's teeth on edge. He is also, infuriatingly, impossible to ignore. Hartwood, for his part, takes one look at Alice and loses his heart entirely — but he has no intention of winning her through his title or her parents' pressure. He wants her to choose him freely.
