The Crown Electric Picture House has been open for less than a month when something impossible appears in a local film. Assistant manager Nora Hargreaves knows the footage should contain only the Crown’s opening-week crowds, its new frontage and the people who happened to pass the camera outside. Instead, the screen shows Nora inside the projection booth before she has ever entered it. Then another image appears. A woman is sitting in the auditorium who has never sat there before. As Nora, projectionist Percy Larkin and the Crown’s staff try to determine how the images could have been created, every ordinary explanation leaves something behind. And when the people shown on film begin occupying the exact places already waiting for them on screen, the question becomes harder to avoid. Are the pictures predicting what will happen? Or are they helping it happen? Set in 1937 during the first weeks of the Crown Electric Picture House, The Pictures Were Wrong is a standalone historical uncanny mystery and a prequel to Persistence of Vision.
