When a college professor asked that question while dismissing the concept for a screenplay, I went and did a ton of research and found that nearly one-third of all cowboys in the Wild West were actually freed slaves set adrift after the Civil War ended. What is here is the research, a primer on the American West as viewed through a very specific lens--of trying to write a screenplay that weaves together the yarns and anecdotes of several African Americans, set in Abilene, Kansas--the first of the Wild West cattle towns when "all hell is in session." The second half details the strategy of weaving those facts into a screenplay that was later turned into a novel...The Prairie Dance. (View on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RvYmHh)
