Sworn guard, Queen's handmaiden, and a court that extinguishes joy at every turn. Serving in the Dark Queen's court is a life of enduring one horror after another. Madeline's once-close friend, the Queen herself, provides safety from daily cruelty, but a childhood companionship cannot survive the weight of the crown. Captain Jerome of the Queen's Guard has served two Queens now. The last one, he failed; her memory a constant rebuke of his duty. He will not fail again. Yet his vows waver at a handmaiden, a flower too bright for the dark court. She pursues him unrelentingly as though determined to make him forget his duty. Her presence eases his guilt; her absence reminds him that he cannot afford distraction. Torn between duty and his heart, can he find a way to be true to both? Or will she wait in vain for a man whose life is not his own? *Content warnings: gore, mutilation, violence, blood, mentions of SA (not explicit, not between main characters) *A standalone novella in The Dark Queens series. The main series does NOT need to be read first.
