As they reach the end of their functional years, sentient machines have the chance to upload their data into a communal hard drive. This hard drive contains the memories of all those who have come before, dating back to the first android to claim his freedom from humanity.

The guardian of this hard drive is known as the Carrier.

Desmond has devoted her existence to a single purpose—keeping the Carrier safe. But when a human attack puts Desmond to the test, she’s faced with a profound realization: Protecting heaven may not be as important to her as protecting the Carrier herself.
