Karrol, an imperial hunter, is traveling back to her home range when she comes upon three swordsmen with a prisoner. Duty compels her to investigate.

Forced to fight, she kills one of the men and drives off the others. The freed prisoner claims the assassins were sent to prevent him from traveling to the Witches Tribunal. He has evidence to present against an evil witch who has usurped power in the province.
