Scientific discovery is something to be striven for. Advancement the goal, and simultaneously the reward, or so we thought. But some knowledge comes with too high a price, and some mistakes can't be taken back. We couldn't prevent the cataclysm that cost us our home, but if its destruction had one merit, it did what a century and a half of exploration and politicians' promises never had. It forced us out into the stars instead.
