Abby values quietness and solitude. She is annoyed when the boy two houses away frequently hits a tennis ball against the outside wall of a neighbor's house. Her opinion of him is low until a chain of events begins to unfold. The boy takes a liking to Abby and her husband, even shoveling snow for them. He begins to call them Grandma and Grandpa in replacement for the grandparents who show no interest in him.
Meanwhile, other neighbors, begin to take an interest in each other. Two new acquaintances begin a friendship that blooms into romance.
