When pharmacist Safiya Hassan loses contact with her brother Ibrahim, a gnawing dread tells her something is terribly wrong. Her worst fears are confirmed when RSF soldiers launch a violent assault on Khartoum, turning familiar streets into battlegrounds. As Safiya witnesses horrific war crimes, she realizes Sudan is no longer safe. Shaken to her core and desperate to escape the escalating violence, she resolves to flee her homeland. In the chaos, Safiya encounters Amir, a silent, traumatized boy. Unable to abandon him, she takes him under her protection as they attempt to escape the besieged city. Deep beneath war-torn Khartoum, Safiya, her daughter Lina, and Amir join other desperate families in a network of colonial-era tunnels—their only path to refugee camps and safety. In the darkness, collapsing structures threaten to entomb them, while the fear of discovery by soldiers drives them deeper into the underground labyrinth. These survivors must navigate not only the physical dangers of their escape, but also the devastating human cost of a country tearing itself apart. About the Author Nick Ehizojie lives in Alberta, Canada, where he finds daily renewal in the province's landscapes and changing seasons.
