Kercy Powell loves spending summers with her parents at their secluded cottage in the Soshone Islands area in Ontario; a place where her retarded development and wheelchair are never on display. When her mother sells their island paradise shortly before her eighteenth birthday, Kercy is shocked, especially when her mother implores her to never return. “Even after I’m dead… don’t ever go back there!” Over the ensuing years, Kercy undergoes a miraculous metamorphous, able to leave her wheelchair forever. Upon her mother’s death, she inherits a fortune and buys back her most treasured getaway. Ignoring her mother’s warning, Kercy is soon plagued by old nightmares; strange beings who visit in her sleep. She manages to push away the fear, until one night when two men intent on robbing her cottage decide instead to rape her. She escapes into the thick understory of the island only to witness the unholy cries of her attackers being savagely butchered. The inexplicable murders trigger a visit from a cagey FBI Special Agent, Mallory, whose only interest lies in how the two men met their fate. But Kercy has no idea, until she comes face to face with her “protectors,” creatures who appear to live beneath the deep, icy waters of Georgian Bay. And while they’ve rescued her before, Kercy can’t shake the notion that their intentions are wicked, and that she is somehow involved in their horrifying scheme.
